What can you do if you are stuck with a clogged up drainpipe? Well the easiest way to unclog your bathroom drainage is to use a drainage plunger. The whole process of unclogging a blocked drain is pretty simple and straightforward. Obviously you shouldn’t move the plunger up and down forcefully as this will be ineffective and could make the blockage worse. To ensure that the plunger works effectively, wholly cover the drain pipe with its bell-shaped head, and gently push it down once, and immediately come up, so that suction is created. Hopefully the suction of the upwards movement of the drainage plunger will pull what ever is stuck in your drain pipe back up into the bathroom toilet, tub or sink. It should be noted here that some bath tubs and sinks have overspill outlets that must be plugged with a sponge or wet towel before using your plunger if this approach is to work.
Chemical unblocking agents can also be used to dislodge or dissolve choked matter. But it would only be recommended to resort to using chemicals after you have tried fixing the problem with a waste pipes plunger. Let the chemicals stay in the drain for some time and then wash them out with hot water, do this slowly to ensure that the water is flowing away. Wear proper clothes while dealing with chemicals, remember the strong chemicals can fall on your clothes and spoil them so be careful with that. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. Also remember to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully so that you do not create new problems.
If the plunger still doesn’t make any difference after the chemical treatment you could use pliers or a pipe wrench to loosen the P-trap nuts. Keep a bucket and towel to deal with the mess that will follow. If you dont want to destroy the chrome finish of your pipes, then wrap the jaws of the pipe wrench with the electric tape; this will also help you to get a better grip. After you have removed the P-trap, clean it thoroughly to eradicate any solid material that may be blocking the pipe opening. If, however you cannot find any solid materials the problem is probably harder to get to, between the trap and the soil stack deep in the waste pipes pipework.
A toilet auger is the best tool for dealing with toilets that are blocked,. However a plumbers drain snake is more suitable for bath tub or kitchen sink drains pipes. Because of their size and length, drain snakes are well designed for getting at stoppages in small spaces in difficult to reach places. By twisting the adjustable handle to drill into the blockage, you then pull the obstruction up and out of your drainage. After you have successfully removed the the blockage you should put the P-trap back into place and check if water can flow through freely. Make certain the whole thing is tightly closed and check for any leakage in the P-trap and ensure that the water flows well.
If all these methods fail then you need to call in a professional plumber. Professional plumbers can identify and solve serious problems like aged pipes caving in, tree root invasion, blocked sewer line or soil stack; these should not be attempted by the homeowner as you will not have the right tools to solve the problem.
