Do you know what the best way to unblock drainage is? Using a plunger is the most effective and quickest way to solve this common household problem. Using a drains plunger is relatively simple to do. But the last thing you want to do is be too aggressive and pulse to quickly. To achieve the desired effect, the drain pipe should be totally covered with the head of the plunger and then the bell-shaped rubber must be pressed down slowly; next the handle should be pulled up fast and with good enough force to produce an effective suction. So any material that is stuck into the bathroom, sink or tub drainage should come out with the upward pull on the drainage plunger. Some tubs and sinks have an overflow outlet; remember to plug this outlet with the help of a wet towel or sponge before using the plunger.

Instead of using your plunger you can apply commercial products containing chemicals that can dissolve the blockage, for instance concentrated drains cleaner. The chemicals are normally applied only after an unsuccessful attempt to remove the clog using a plunger. Run the chemical into the drainpipe and allow it to work for about 30 minutes before flushing the drain pipe with hot water. Just to be careful, you must put on clothes that you wouldn’t care about if they get spoiled by dirt or harmful chemicals. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any unnecessary problems.

You can use a pipe wrench or pliers to unscrew the P-trap if you are unable to remove the blockage with the plunger, this will give you access to the pipe. Keep a bucket and towel to deal with the mess that will follow. By covering the jaws of your wrench with electrical tape you will avoid damaging the chrome on your pipes and it will also allow you to get a better purchase of them. With the trap opened, insert gloved hands to remove any debris that may be blocking the bends. But in case you are unable to find any blockage, chances are that the problem lies deep down between the soil stack and the trap and you will need additional tools.

If you are trying to unclog your toilet you can use a toilet auger. With a bathtub or sink, however a drain snake should be used. The instrument is designed in a way that it can travel deep down into your pipes. A plumbers drainage snake has an adjustable handle which is used to make a drill into the clog, it then becomes easy to remove the obstruction by pulling it upwards. After you have successfully removed the the blockage you should put the P-trap back into place and check if water can flow through freely. Make sure that all the connections are properly fitted and sealed, and also check the P-trap for leakages.

If all these methods fail then you need to call in a professional plumber. You will need to call a professional plumber or drains pipes service when the clog is in the sewer or soil track or when it is due to tree roots, or when the pipe has collapsed due to some reason.
